Marketing / Innovation Catalysts

The Innovator's Mindset

"One does not stand still looking for a path. One walks, and as one walks,
a path comes into being."
- Rev. Masao Kodani, is the American-born leader of the Shin Buddhist
Temple in Los Angeles, California.
Editor's Note: One of the beauties of Buddhism is its uncanny ability to
get right to the heart of the matter. The truth is that many of us, charged
with bringing innovation to bear, stand still, looking for a path. When what
it really takes is being in action, and NOT knowing precisely where you will
end up.
We're talking about innovation, for Pete's sake, not a grocery list.
Innovation is something NEW. That means we're discovering. Brand new things,
emerge from only one place, and that place is "not knowing." When we move past
what we "know," when we're finished with all of the tried and true explanations
and ideas, only then do we enter the realm of inquiry... and in that realm
comes true invention.
What can Ideaology do? Traditionally structured businesses aren't organized
for uncertainty. We help them make this change creatively and powerfully
throught multi-dimensionally programs that create inventive cultures with
velocity. Call us at 248 879 9129 to learn more.

Marketing / Innovation Catalysts

The Innovator's Mindset

"Adventure isn't hanging on a rope off the side of a mountain. Adventure is
an attitude that we must apply to the day-to-day obstacles of life."
- John Amatt is a Canadian adventurer, author and speaker who has
led expeditions to remote regions of Northern Norway, Peru, Nepal, China and
Greenland. He organized and participated in Canada's first expedition to
summit Mt. Everest.
Editor's Note: Are you hanging on a rope off the side of the mountain when
you venture into new territory or do you experience the very same
circumstances as an adventure? The fuzzy front end of innovation, when you can't see
precisely where you are going, how to get there or how it will turn out, is
always uncomfortable. Those who become effective innovators learn to remain
there, exploring, until a clear direction emerges. THERE IS NO COMFORT ZONE.
Those great ideas you're sitting on because they would take you out of your
comfort zone and into the unknown may be your future meal ticket
What can Ideaology do? We work with small groups to transform their
relationship to four areas that underpin innovation: rules, failure, resources and
open-minded discovery. Want to learn more? Call us at 248 879 9129.

Marketing / Innovation Catalysts

The Innovative Environment

"So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can because that's where you
will find success, on the far side of failure."
- Thomas John Watson, Sr. (1874-1956) was the American president of
International Business Machines (IBM), who was called the world's greatest salesman
when he died in 1956. Watson oversaw the company's growth into an
international force. He developed IBM's effective management style.
Editor's Note: Fear of failure. It keeps the second grader's hand in his
lap when the teacher asks a question. It keeps the manager from championing a
great idea and it keeps the inventive person from pursuing that idea when
someone says, "It will never work. They'll never agree to this"
Fear of failure is one of the great, unaddressed issues in organizations
seeking systemic innovation. Until this monumental subject is broached and
people's attitudes toward failure are shifted, efforts to spark innovation
throughout an organization are akin to pushing up a rope.
What can Ideaology do? Operating just out of your field of vision are
policies, practices and informal protocol that inadvertently feed fear of
failure and discourage the kind of experimentation that results in discovery.
Ideaology works hand in hand with executives, managers and innovators themselves,
to identify and adapt these forces so that experimentation becomes an
invigorating experience that yields results.

The Innovative Environment

"New ideas stir from every corner. They show up disguised innocently as
interruptions, contradictions and embarrassing dilemmas. Beware of total
strangers and friends alike who shower you with comfortable sameness, and remain
open to those who make you uneasy, for they are the true messengers of the
future."
-Rob Lebow, author, business leader and consultant who has held executive
positions with Avon and Microsoft. He is best known for his book, "A Journey
Into the Heroic Environment."
Editor's Note: How easy it seems to create a life inside the "comfort
zone," a place we believe will insulate us from unpleasant circumstances and
events like the loss of a job or prestige. But to discover new things, we must
leave the safety of the tried and true. We must, as Captain James T. Kirk,
of the Starship Enterprise said, "Go boldly where no one has gone before."
The more adept we can become at moving into and exploring uncharted waters,
the more effective we become at making discoveries that pay off in the
marketplace.
What can Ideaology do? Yes, new ideas do stir from every corner. Our
commitment is to the people who have them. We work with organizations to
identify and adapt the policies and practices that inadvertently suppress ideas.
We enable organizations to tap into the most potent source of innovation at
their disposal -- their own, naturally inventive people.

Marketing / Innovation Catalysts

The Innovative Environment

"Play will be to the 21st century what work was to the last 300 years of
industrial society - our dominant way of knowing, doing and creating value."
Pat Kane (1964-) is a Scottish musician, author and consultant who is best
known as half of the Pop duo Hue & Cry. Kane wrote "The Play Ethic." He is
now founder and a consultant with New Integrity.
Editor's Note: Do you play -- I mean really play? I'm not talking about
tennis or golf, but play ...not expecting some outcome, and just exploring for
the sheer joy of it? If you look, you'll discover almost all great
adventurers, scientists, artists, musicians and discoverers play.
Here's a shocking fact: most adults don't play. They stopped a long time
ago. Now, it's nothing more than a fond memory. But there was a time as
children when play was one of our most important inventive tools. Just because I
can't tell you what is to be discovered from play doesn't mean it doesn't
have value. Albert Einstein said, "Not everything that counts can be counted
and not everything that can be counted counts." Now, go watch this video
before you plan your next play date. (By the way, I've actually done this!)
